FREE BOOKS! Sounds great, right? Who doesn’t love getting something for free? But is it possible? You bet! In fact, many of our customers don’t pay for their books. So how do they do it? They do it through inventive sponsorship. If you have ever gone through the process of recruiting a sponsor, you know that it can be a difficult process. Businesses and organizations just don’t like to hand over money – unless it provides them a real tangible value. And that is exactly what our customers have been able to give their sponsors. Below are just a few examples of how our customers have successfully attracted sponsors…and been able to provide our books to their students at no cost (or at a significantly reduced cost) to their school and/or department. In addition, we have provided you a list of possible sponsors to consider for several of our publications. If you would like more ideas on how to attract
a sponsor, or to learn how other schools have used sponsorship successfully,

Career Fairs
Career fairs are a great opportunity to attract sponsors. Recruiter want more foot traffic to their booths, and a few our forward thinking customers have used this to their advantage. Career fairs, which are focused on the attendee’s future professional opportunities, are a fantastic time to provide students a copy of Backpack To Briefcase or Life After Graduation. However, our customers didn’t have the financial resources to offer all of their students a free copy of Backpack To Briefcase or Life After Graduation. So what did they do? They approached several of their recruiters and offered them the opportunity to sponsor Backpack To Briefcase or Life After Graduation in exchange for allowing them the ability to hand out the free book to career fair attendees, thus driving more traffic to their booth and exposing their company to more potential candidates. The school benefited as well because the book was individualized to school specifications; from the student’s point of view, it was a gift from the recruiter and the school. As you can see from this example, individualizing the book provides a number of benefits. First, the students are provided a value-added gift that will help them achieve success as they transition into their new career. Next, the sponsor is provided more exposure to potential candidates, even after the career fair. Finally, the book appears as if it’s a gift from the school or department. So how do you avoid students picking up more than one book? One idea is to have school representatives stand at the entrance of the career fair and hand out tickets, coupons, or small flyers. These tickets, coupons or flyers can be exchanged at the sponsor’s booth.
Orientation
People who work in the area of new student orientation know that it’s difficult to keep a new student’s attention once they arrive on campus and classes begin. They tend to be – understandably – anxious and distracted when the school year gets going. What better time to inform students about what they can expect when they arrive on campus then before they even get there? The problem, however, is how do you get the resources to the students before college begins – and on a limited budget? One of our customers came up with a great answer to this question. As soon as the new students accepted their invitation to attend the college, the Orientation Department sent the students a welcome package that included a copy of Life During College. The Orientation Department knew that this was the best time to provide new students (and their parents) this information, as they were likely anxious and eager to learn about what to expect during the college transition process, as well as what they could do to ensure success. So who did the Orientation Department approach to sponsor this program? Simple: various college-based businesses that wanted exposure to the new students. As you can see from this example, individualizing the book provides a number of benefits. First, and most important, the new students receive a valuable gift to help them make a successful transition into college. Next, the book is personalized to show the students (and their parents) that their college recognizes them as a unique and special individual. And finally, the sponsor is provided a unique opportunity to promote their products and/or services to the new student (and their parents) in a non-intrusive manner.
Graduation
Graduation is an exciting and busy time – for new graduates, as well as for the Alumni and Career Service Offices. Alumni and Career Service Offices are faced with a daunting task during this time of year – how to maintain contact with the new graduate after they leave college? The Alumni Office wants to maintain contact with the new graduate to keep informed about various services and benefits associated with being a new member of the college’s alumni. The Career Service Office is also interested in maintaining contact with the new graduate so that they can further develop their employment and salary database, among other things. But how can they maintain contact with the new graduate if they don’t know where they are headed? One of our customers developed a great program to get that information. As the new graduates walked off the stage after receiving their degree, representatives from the Alumni and Career Service Offices handed them flyers that read, “Be sure to visit the ‘New Grad Tent’ after the graduation ceremony to receive your free gift pack!” Outside, in the “New Grad Tent,” were packages filled with various goodies from the college – including pens, stickers, informational pieces, and a copy of Your Financial Future, Life After Graduation or Backpack To Briefcase. To receive the free gift pack, all the new graduate had to do was to fill out a short form about where they were headed. So how did the Alumni and Career Service Offices pay for such a grand function? Through sponsorship! As you can see from this example, individualizing the book provides a number of benefits. First, the Alumni and Career Service Offices were not only able to obtain the information they were seeking, but they were also able to provide their new graduates a personalized value-added gift that would be recognizable for years after the graduate left campus. Next, the sponsors not only associated themselves with the value-added gift – providing them long-term exposure to the new graduate, but they were also invited to have their own booth space in the “New Grad Tent” to promote their services to the new graduate, as well as the grad’s parents. A win-win for everyone!
